Jon Rahm drained a biride putt on the fourth playoff hole to defeat Andrew Landry and clinch the CareerBuilder challenge.
It was Rahm’s, 23, first win of the season on La Quinta soil in California but holing his crucial 10-footer with dusk settling on the eighteenth green, gave him his fourth career win.
The Spaniard endured a rough third round on the Stadium Course at PGA West, settling for a two-under-par 70, put delivered on the final day with a closing 67.
He steadily made the turn in 34 before turning up the heat on the back-nine, making three birdies in five holes on the back nine.
The Spaniard missed a chance to close the tournament out in regulation, failing to extend his lead on the sixteenth with a makable birdie putt inside of 6 feet, and couldn’t capitalise on the first sudden-death hole. But the Spaniard gritted his teeth to throw in a close approach straight over the pin, learning from his earlier mistake and stroked his putt in from the right edge.
Landry kept pace with Rahm throughout the afternoon and waited patiently after a birdie on thirteen a spout of four pars, left him needing to birdie the 72nd hole to reach a playoff.
The American obliged the crowds carding a three for the PGA Tour to see back-to-back tournaments needing a playoff to decide the champion, with Patton Kizzire facing a six-hole playoff against James Hahn to the claim his PGA Tour win at the Sony Open.
However, it wasn’t to be for the Texan who lead after the half-way stage in the week, seeing Rahm catapult ahead of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the world rankings.
Rahm enters Torrey Pines this week as the defending champion and now the world’s number two ranked player, only taking him 577 days to ascend to the top of the game since his first PGA Tour start at the 2016 Quicken Loans National.
