Jordan Spieth effectively lost the 2016 Masters to champion Danny Willet because of the peril of Amen Corner.
Spieth started the day three clear of playing partner Smylie Kaufman and started the day well too.
He made birdie at the second but gave that shot back at the fifth to go back to level for the day.
The American then carded four straight birdies on the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth to move five clear at the top of the leader board.
Spieth’s first mistake of the day came with an unforced error as he found the green-side bunker on from the middle of the fairway and could not get up and down.
The 22-year-old then carved his tee shot on 11 outright and could only chip back out onto the fairway. Spieth knocked that shot to 10 foot but missed the putt for back-back bogeys.
Standing on 12 (Amen Corner) still two under for the day, Spieth pushed his tee shot out to the right but the ball hit the bank, then straight into Rae’s Creek. This time, two-year’s ago Speith lost his ball in the water and ended up losing to champion Bubba Watson. He also had a close call in last year’s Master’s but the ball just stayed out of the water and he went on to win his first green jacket. This year the Texan then walked back a good 50-yards to get the perfect yardage back over the water, but he caught the ball ‘fat’ and found the water again.
Third time lucky for the defending champion as he got over the water and found the back bunker and carded a triple-bogey seven.
Spieth now had it all to do but he could only birdie 13, 14 and a dropped shot 17 meant he would finish in a tie for second and lose out to Englishman Danny Willet.
