Valderrama day one round up

Alexander Levy takes a one-shot lead into round two of the Spanish Open as he opened up with a round of 66, one shot clear of Englishman James Morrison.

The Frenchman started the day in perfect fashion as he carded back-to-birdies on holes one and two. But that was it for the front nine as things seemed to go a little flat as he could only shoot seven consecutive pars.

But Levy got back on track on the back nine as he birdied 10 and 12 to get too four under par. Although Levy dropped a shot at the par four 13th, he got that shot straight back on the next hole.

The man who won the French Amateur championship in 2009, got to six under par after birding holes 16 and 17 but dropped a shot at the last to finish on five-under par.

Defending champion Morrison is in the perfect position to defend his title after he carded a round of 67 which includes five birdies and one bogey. Also in tied second is fellow Englishman Andrew Johnston, Stuart Manley and Alejandro Canizares.

Kaymer is also in contention as he shot a two-under round of 69. The German spoke earlier in the week of his awe for the course and he hasn’t failed to show up.

Tournament host Sergio Garcia failed to turn up as he carded a hard fought three-over 74. The man who won the Spanish Open when it was last held at Valderrama shot six bogeys and three birdies.
