‘So happy with the way I played’

It’s been a great two weeks for English golf as Andrew Johnston followed up Danny Willet’s win at the Masters by winning in Spain last weekend.

On a day where scoring was a lot easier than over the last three rounds. Johnston got off to a bad start as he carded a bogey five at the first. Johnston steadied the ship with five straight pars before shooting back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight to finish on one under for the round heading into the back nine.

The new world number 125 carded a further four pars before getting back to level for the day after shooting a bogey on the par four 14th hole to bring him back to level with Luiten but after carding a birdie on the 16th, it confirmed the victory for the Finchley-based player.

Johnston told Sky Sports : “It’s great, I’m pretty speechless and so happy with the way I played.

“I drove the ball well all week, chipped and putted pretty well but struggled a bit with my irons the first three days. I just kept going and digging in and found something on the fourth.

“I hit one four iron as a lay-up and hit it straight out the middle and was like ‘Okay, there you go, that’s the feeling,’ and I managed to keep that going the whole way through.”
