‘I nearly quit’

Luke Donald has revealed that he nearly left the game of golf as he felt he was working very hard and not getting much back.

The Englishman’s last professional victory to date was the Dunlop Phoenix Open on the Asian Tour in 2013.

Since then, Donald has slipped down the slippery slope of the world rankings and until last week he was 95th in the world, but after a strong finish at the RBC Heritage, the British Masters host is now 68th and will be hoping to make a late charge into Darren Clarks Ryder Cup team.

The 38-year-old moved up from 95 to 68 in the world rankings thanks to his tied for second finish at Harbour Town. He told Sky Sports News HQ: “It’s been very tough and at times I even thought ‘do I want to continue working this hard and not getting much out of it?’

“Certainly when you are playing well and competing each week the game seems pretty easy but the real aim is when you are not playing well how many times can you go out there and keep working until something clicks.

“Obviously, last week was hopefully a big step in the right direction for me.”
