Woods to miss 2016 US Open

Tiger Woods, the former world number one, has stated that he is not “physically ready” to play in this year’s US Open and will not make an appearance at the Quickens Loan National later in June.

The 14-time Major winner has been out of tournament action since the Wyndham Championship in late August 2015. Since then there has been speculation amongst both fans and media to when his return would be, with many hoping that it would be next week at Oakmont.

Now at 40, Woods has had three operations to help fix his back problems and ease the pain, however, this decision to delay his return after a statement on TigerWoods.com , is simply because he is “not yet ready for tournament competition”.

“While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year’s U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National. I am making progress, but I’m not yet ready for tournament competition.”

“I want to thank everyone for their continued support. The positive texts, emails, and calls I have received have been incredible. I want to wish Mike Davis, Diana Murphy, the USGA, the players and everyone at Oakmont a very successful week.”

Speculation increased when Woods registered to play the 116th US Open Championship, at Oakmont, but it is now official that Woods will miss the tournament. Similarly, Tiger Woods missed this year’s Masters in April for only his second time since his tournament debut in 1995.

Woods has furthered his return by also confirming that he will miss the Quickens Loan National, but he will make appearances as the tournament host.

“I will be hosting and attending my foundation’s tournament, the Quicken Loans National, at Congressional. It’s the 10th year of our tournament, and we continue to support the community, the military and the programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation.”

The world of golf is greatly anticipating the return of Tiger, who in his last competitive start at the Wyndham Championship shot three consecutive rounds under 70 to finish the tournament T10, his best finish throughout the 2014-15 season.

Woods will be a big miss at the 116th US Open, he has won America’s home major three times. With the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines being his last major win after beating Rocco Mediate in a play-off.
