Rory McIlroy is reportedly keen to play in the same group as Tiger Woods at the Genesis Open in California this week.
McIlroy, Woods, and defending PGA champion Justin Thomas have been drawn together for the first two rounds at the Riviera Country Club.

McIlroy said it wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, but was looking forward to the opportunity:
I wouldn’t have minded a nice quiet couple of days on Thursday and Friday, but any time you have a chance to play in a group like that you relish it and embrace it,
I would rather be in this group than not, and whenever you get a chance to play alongside one of your heroes it’s always nice.
McIlroy and Woods last played together competitively in the 2015 Masters, in the final round at Augusta.

The Northern Irishman endured a tough week at Pebble Beach, missing the cut by two shots. In an effort to turn his fortunes around, McIlroy will be using a new putter in California.
Despite this, McIlroy placed the blame on the greens he was putting on:
I had a bit of wobble on the greens on Friday, but I didn’t put that down to anything more than just surfaces weren’t ideal and I let it get into my head a little bit,
The Genesis Open begins on Thursday evening, UK time.
