Emotional Bubba Watson wins Genesis Open

Bubba Watson had tears of joy as he secured his first victory in two years by winning the Genesis Open, according to a report on the Independent.

Watson beat competition from his compatriot Kevin Na and ended ahead by two shots to take home the $1.3m prize as Irishman Rory McIlroy finished 20th despite a strong final round.

The 39-year-old could not hold back his emotions after the victory at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, especially after the fact that he had seriously considered retiring from the sport due to having doubts about his physical ability.

The American proved that he still has what it takes to play golf at the highest level and has now won a career total of 10 PGA Tour titles.

He said:

It means a lot, my goal was always to get 10 wins and this got me to my 10th win. There’s so many emotions going around my head right now. You never know if you’re going to play good again, you never know if you’re going to be able to lift a trophy again.

I’ve mentioned it (retirement) about 10, 12 times to my wife, we’ve sat down and had many talks about it because physically I wasn’t where I needed to be to keep continuing to play. Obviously God’s given me a gift to play golf and I’m not good at anything else.

The win will be a huge confidence boost for Watson, who will now probably compete in a few more tournaments before deciding to retire from the sport.
