Luke Donald is keen to return to the top of world golf, a place he feels he belongs.
Donald went into the Genesis last weekend ranked 177th in the world, the lowest since he turned professional. He’s also without a win on any tour in four years.

Despite this, the 40-year-old Donald is plotting a return to the upper echelons of world golf.
Speaking to Telegraph Sport, he said:
My competitiveness is just as strong as it was,
Yeah, it’s been a struggle so far this year, but it’s funny, sometimes you miss cuts and you feel kind of hopeless – and I’ve been missing cuts and feeling kind of hopeful. Good stuff will come, and it doesn’t feel far away. I’m feeling positive.

Donald did make his first cut of 2018 in California, but is keeping golf in a healthy perspective:
True, I don’t beat myself up anywhere nearly like I used to. But with my family, my view of what is most important has, of course, shifted. And that’s the hardest thing, I suppose.
Putting in all this effort and not coming away with anything tangible to show for it, when I could have been home watching my three girls grow up every day at an important stage of their lives. No, I don’t have to do this. But I do enjoy it. I’ll give it a few more years.
At just 5’8, Donald is one of the last of the “small hitters”. In golf’s modern form, hitting a ball 300 yards is almost a prerequisite to any kind of success.
Despite his inherent disadvantage, Donald isn’t letting it get to him:
I’ve done it before, I can do it again
