Davies records best finish since 2005

Laura Davies has posted her best performance at a tournament since 2005.

In the LPGA Founders Cup, being hosted at the Wildfire Golf Club in Arizona, the 54-year-old Brit roared home to a tied-second place finish – her best result in 13 years.

After carding a final round of 69, the Coventry-born Davies was looking at a score of 14-under-par. Tied with Marina Alex of America and Ariya Jutanugar of Thailand, the group finished five shots off the pace of winner Inbee Park.

Despite not coming out on top, Davies spoke in glowing terms of her form on what is now her 32nd year on the tour.

At 54 I still feel like I can hit the ball as well as most of the really good players out here,

I know I’ve been playing really well and I haven’t had the results to reflect that

Davies’ last win on the tour came in 2001, at the Wegmans Rochester International.

On the European Tour, the four-time major winner has recorded a victory as recently as 2010.

It sounds like Davies has no intentions to retire soon, either.

Now people might stop asking me when I’m going to retire – that’s the best thing about it.

I can just go and play and see if I can get a few more top 10 finishes this year, because the more I get up there, I might have a chance of winning again.
