Ian Poulter wins the Houston Open to secure a Masters spot

Ian Poulter secured a dramatic playoff victory at the Houston Open to clinch his place at this year’s Masters Championships, according to a report on BBC Sport.

The Englishman played some brilliant golf throughout the event and forced a playoff with Beau Hossler as the pair battled for victory.

The par-four final hole was replayed as Hossler chipped his shot into the water, resulting in Poulter having the advantage.

The 42-year-old kept calm and two-putted for par to secure the crucial win which confirms his participation in the Masters.

Poulter was under the impression that he had already qualified for the tournament after reaching the last eight of the Match Play World Golf Championships.

However, that was not the case and winning the Houston Open was his last chance of securing a place at the Masters.

Poulter said:

Last week was painful. To come here this week I was tired and frustrated. I had packed my bags to leave on Friday night, and had a mental switch.

I was patient, I waited my time and this is amazing. I haven’t won a strokeplay event in the United States before and to do it this week is amazing.

The win could be a turning point in Poulter’s career as he could now be involved with Europe’s Ryder Cup side. Poulter will be going into the Master filled with confidence. The competition at Augusta begins on Thursday.
