Lydia Ko wins Mediheal Championship to end two-year drought

Former world number one Lydia Ko secured her first victory in two years in California by winning the Mediheal Championship, according to a report on BBC Sport.

The 21-year-old holed a three-foot eagle putt on the first playoff hole, the par-five 18th, to secure the victory.

The New Zealand international has waited a long time to get back to winning ways but it is a credit to her mentality that she was able to do so.

Ko created history in 2015 when she became the youngest ever world number one at the age of 17.

Her last tournament win was almost two years ago when she lifted the Marathon Classic in the summer of 2016.

As expected, she was ecstatic with the victory and is hoping for plenty more to come this year.

She said:

It’s a huge relief because people were saying you’re not winning because of this or that, and my family, friends and sponsors were just really supportive of me.

When that putt dropped I was like ‘Oh my God’. A lot of emotions, my whole team and my family have worked really hard for this moment.

She was obviously very emotional after the victory and this could be seen in her celebrations as she shed tears of joy.
