Woods struggles on first day of Wells Fargo Championship

Tiger Woods has endured a slightly frustrating first day of the Wells Fargo Championship.

Despite going round with a 71 (good for even par), the once-imperious Woods sits six shots behind leader John Peterson.

The 42-year-old last competed at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina back in 2011, and remarked upon the changes the course had undergone in the time he had been away:

This golf course is a lot harder, a lot harder than when I played,

The golf course has gotten more difficult, a lot longer. More bunkers are in play, they’re more difficult to carry, and some of the greens have more slope.

The changes have seen the course be elongated to 7,554 yards, and the par drop from 72 to 71.

Real opportunities for birdies have dropped from around nine, to a much more difficult five.

Woods problems were located on the greens on day one at Quail Hollow:

Just struggled with the speed of the greens. They’re on the slower side. They feel springy and they feel fast, especially as I’m walking on them, but they’re not putting that way. What I was feeling and sending just didn’t match up.
