Paul Casey two off the lead at Wells Fargo Championship

England’s Paul Casey is just two shots off the lead at the halfway point of the Wells Fargo Championship after carding a solid second-round of 68, BBC report.

The 40-year-old moved into contention on Friday after making two birdies in his second round in North Carolina.

Australian Jason Day shot a superb second-round 67 to catapult him into a share of second alongside Arron Wise.

The trio are trailing to surprise American leader Peter Malnati, who is seven under. Malnati, ranked 673rd in the world, followed up his opening-round 67 with a second-round 68.

Talking to Sky Sports after his round, Casey said:

It was much better ball-striking than yesterday and a much cleaner scorecard. I gave myself a lot of opportunities. Certainly trending in the right direction with the way I played.

Surprisingly, both Rory McIlroy, who won the tournament in 2010 and 2015, and Tiger Woods were made to sweat in order to make the weekend action, with the pair just squeezing above the cut off line by one shot on two over par.

It was definitely a birthday to forget for McIlroy who carded a second-round 76 after putting himself in contention after the first round.
