Fellow American Peter Uihlein shot the round of the day, a nine-under 62 at Quail Hollow to put himself into a tie for third alongside England’s Paul Casey who still has a shot at the title.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy enjoyed a third round 66 which leaves him in a group of nine at three under.
While Tiger Woods, who just creeped into the weekends play, shot a third-round 68, leaving him on one under heading into the final round.
