England’s Lee Slattery in the lead at the Italian Open

Englishman Lee Slattery carded a phenomenal third round nine-under 62 to take a one shot lead heading into the final round of the Italian Open, Sky Sports report.

Slattery, ranked 340th in the world, fired in eight birdies and an eagle in his round to go one clear of Dane Thorbjorn Olesen and home favourite Francesco Molinari who share second place.

Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion, carded a solid third round 67 to sit on 14 under, along with the leader at the halfway stage, Germany’s Martin Kaymer.

Fellow Englishmen Andy Sullivan and Jordan Smith are also in with a chance in Italy after they both carded rounds of 65 to take their score after 54 holes to 13 under.

Slattery has only ever won on the European tour twice as a professional, claiming the Russian Open three years ago and the Madrid Masters back in 2011 and will be looking to make it three on Sunday.
