McIlroy hopeful ahead of US Open bid

Having won the tournament seven years ago, the US Open is a hill Rory McIlroy has already climbed. Typically, the 29-year-old is hungry for more.

The Irishman’s last major came in 2014 at the PGA Championship.

His 2011 success at the US Open marked the first major championship for McIlroy, and came mercifully quickly after an excruciating fourth round collapse at the Masters.

As Shinniecock Hills Golf Club prepares to welcome the  best the golfing world has to offer, McIlroy isn’t feeling intimidated:

There are a lot of strong players [here] but I feel good about my game. I just want to give myself another chance to win another major championship. It’s another opportunity to try and do something great this week.

McIlroy would be justified in feeling relaxed. Victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year was his first tournament win in over a year, and the Holywood-native has accumulated more ranking points than anyone else in golf this year.

Indeed, a first placed finish on Long Island this week could see McIlroy return to the top of the world golf rankings.
