Rory McIlroy reveals he feels ‘stuck in neutral’
Former world number one Rory McIlroy admitted after his Irish Open third-round that he feels ‘stuck in neutral’.
The Northern Irishman was again left frustrated after carding a round of 72 to leave himself on one under for the tournament, 13 shots off leader Erik van Rooyen after the South African produced a flawless round of 66.
The 29-year-old tournament host again struggled on the greens, despite a positive start, eventually making four birdies and four bogeys at Ballyliffin.
Shortly after his Saturday round talking to Sky, McIlroy couldn’t hide his frustration, admitting he feels he should’ve carded rounds of 68 instead of level par.
I’m just sort of stuck in neutral this week. I gave myself quite a few chances and I’ve struggled to capitalise on them, but it’s tough.
It’s tough walking off the course with even par when you’ve given yourself loads of chances. I felt like if I had shot something at least in the 68, 67 range today I would have given myself a decent chance tomorrow.
McIlroy will be looking to sign off on a positive note on Sunday, in what has been a disappointing week on the whole.
His round on Sunday will be the Northern Irishman’s last competitive round before The Open Championship begins on July 19.
