Rory McIlroy has revealed that he is being careful to not over-prepare ahead of the Open at Carnoustie, according to a report on the Irish Independent.
McIlroy realised his mistake ahead of the US Open as he played on 18 of the 19 days leading up to the tournament, which resulted in him missing the cut.

He is hoping to have a few more days off this time around for the Open, which is a tournament that he is very familiar with after making his major championship debut on this course in 2007.
The Irishman is hoping to be challenging to lift the Claret Jug and claims that he knows exactly what to expect.
He said:
I felt like I almost over-prepared for Shinnecock. I was there too long and I was starting to see all the spots you shouldn’t hit it in and that’s where I was hitting it in.
So to know the course and know what to expect, it will be nice. The Open is never going to get like that because the greens won’t get that fast and the greens aren’t that slopey. Even if it gets rock hard, it’s still very, very fair and playable.
McIlroy has been keeping things a lot lighter this time around to keep his mind fresh for the Open. He has also decided that he will miss this week’s Scottish Open in favour of concentrating solely on the Open.
