Rory McIlroy to miss play-off opener

Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will miss the Northern Trust Open in New Jersey next week, which is the first event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup play-off series, Sky Sports report.

The 29-year-old, who has come close to winning a couple of majors this season, hinted after last week’s PGA Championship that he may not take part in the event and the Northern Irishman has recently confirmed that he will skip the tournament.

McIlroy joins the American duo of Rickie Fowler and Patrick Rodgers in eligible players planning to sit out of the event, which involves the top 125 players on the FedEx Cup points list.

Fowler is missing the tournament as a precaution due to a torn abdominal muscle, however, McIlroy confirmed he will skip the tournament to rest and reflect.

I need to assess where I’m at, and I think the best thing for me to do right now is take a couple of days off and reflect on what I need to do going forward.

The best thing might be to take that first FedEx Cup week off and work on my game and hopefully come back in a better place.

I’ll do some practice this week and see if I feel ready to go there and play five out of six weeks leading up to the Ryder Cup.

The second event of the play-off series is set to take place in Boston at the end of the month, where McIlroy is expected to play a part in.
