Later this month the golfing world will be watching as the Ryder Cup heads to France for the very first time.
In what could be the most compelling and competitive Ryder Cup in a long time, it’s disappointing to see so many experienced players miss out on the tournament. Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson are amongst some notable omissions.
The best golfers in the world are younger than ever before and the statistics support this statement. The average age of the current top ten golfers in the world is 29.6. Similarly, the average of the four major winners in 2018 is 29.75. Therefore, it is no surprise to see a youthful Ryder Cup this year and to see these older players missing out. It is a spectacle that people will not be accustomed to.
This weekend Thorbjorn Olesen was confirmed as Europe’s final automatic pick after an impressive season joining Alex Noren, Francesco Molinari, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrell Hatton.
USA are blessed with the top three golfers in world being in their team; Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. The other five automatic picks are Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.
Europe captain, Thomas Bjorn, announces his wildcard picks on Wednesday, September 5th.
Meanwhile, USA captain, Jim Furyk, announces three of his four wildcard picks on Tuesday, September 4th and his final one after the BMW Championships on Monday, September 10th.
