Rory McIlroy Is Back, and This Feels Like a Week That Could Tilt His Way

Rory McIlroy is making his first PGA TOUR start since his April Masters victory, and he returns at Quail Hollow, where PGA TOUR says he has won four times, including 2024. He entered the week as the betting favorite.

There are some weeks where Rory McIlroy shows up and you immediately start wondering whether the whole tournament might begin bending in his direction.

This feels like one of those weeks.

Quail Hollow has long looked comfortable in Rory’s hands. Some courses suit a player. This one almost seems to encourage him. He can swing aggressively there without looking reckless. He can use the driver as a weapon without it feeling like a gamble every time. And when McIlroy gets that sort of freedom, things can get loud in a hurry.

So what should we expect?

The obvious answer is contention, but that is a little lazy on its own. The better question is what kind of contention this might be. I would not be shocked if he took a round or so to get fully back into tournament rhythm. Even the best players can look slightly off in their scoring clubs after a break. The driver usually returns first. The wedge game and the short putts are often the real tell.

That is what I will be watching.

If the wedges look sharp early and the putter appears reactive rather than careful, that is usually when a Rory week starts looking dangerous. And Quail Hollow is not the sort of place where he has to invent a game plan from scratch. He knows where he can lean on the course. He knows where he can attack. That familiarity matters more than people think.

There is also the emotional side of it. Returning after a Masters win is different from returning while still chasing one. The air is different. The burden is different. He is not showing up with the same emotional weight hanging off him, and that can free a player up in subtle but important ways.

That does not guarantee anything, of course. Elite fields do not hand out easy weeks just because a venue feels friendly. But if you are looking for a spot where McIlroy feels especially dangerous, this is one of the first places you would circle.

So yes, expect noise. Expect momentum if he gets one good stretch going. Expect the usual sense that if the putter cooperates, he can make the whole thing look simple.

And expect Quail Hollow to feel like Rory territory again.
