Lexi Thompson has withdrawn from the Meijer LPGA Classic because of hip pain, leaving her immediate playing schedule uncertain before next week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The American major winner had been due to tee it up at Blythefield Country Club in Michigan, a venue where she has strong history after winning the tournament in 2015 and finishing T4 and T2 in the last two editions.
However, Thompson pulled out before her opening round after the issue became too painful to manage, with Anne Chen replacing her in the field, according to a fresh update from Golf Monthly.
Thompson injury leaves Major question
The timing is awkward because the LPGA calendar is moving quickly towards another major test at Hazeltine National. Thompson remains listed for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, but the hip problem now makes her build-up one to watch.
Her Instagram message made clear the decision was not casual. Thompson said the Meijer event has long been one of her favourites and that she was heading home to focus on healing.
For the tournament, the withdrawal removes one of its most recognisable names and a past champion from the field. For Thompson, who has played a selective schedule since stepping away from full-time professional golf, the priority is now whether the injury settles quickly enough for her to make next week’s major start.
