England’s Lottie Woad fired a seven-under 64 on Friday to post the Amundi Evian Championship clubhouse target at 11 under par and surge into contention for a maiden major title in Evian-les-Bains.
According to live updates from Golfweek, Woad reeled off three successive birdies in the middle of her second round at Evian Resort Golf Club on the way to the best 36-hole total of any player to have finished her round. The Ladies European Tour noted that Woad had opened the championship with a four-under 67, including a closing eagle. The Englishwoman, who finished one shot outside a play-off at this event last year while still an amateur, is making her first Evian start as a full LPGA Tour member after winning the Kroger Queen City Championship in May.
Aki Iwai Chases Woad As Nelly Korda Sweats On Evian Cut
Overnight leader Aki Iwai, who carded a bogey-free 63 on Thursday, resumed on eight under and stood at 10 under with two holes of her second round remaining as Woad signed her card, per Golfweek. Haeran Ryu, the recently crowned KPMG Women’s PGA champion, eagled the 15th to post eight under, while Sky Sports reported that Jeeno Thitikul’s bogey-free 64 and Charley Hull’s one-under 70 left that pair in the clubhouse on six under.
World No 1 Nelly Korda finished on one over after missed putts at the 17th and 18th, leaving her outside the projected cut line and, per Golfweek, on course for a first missed cut in two years. Korda’s career grand slam bid — she needs an Evian title to complete the set — now rests with the evening finishers.
Weekend coverage of the year’s fourth women’s major begins at 9am on Sky Sports Golf as the field chases the $9.1m purse.
