Golf Talking Points & Facts – 14th July 2026

Two days out from the season’s final men’s major, Royal Birkdale is juggling more storylines than any Open build-up in years — a scorched, unrecognisable golf course, two of the world’s best pretending they don’t care about legacy, a former champion under public fire from one of the game’s sharpest voices, and now a World Cup semi-final threatening to steal the neighbourhood’s attention entirely.

It is a lot for one Southport week to carry, and by Sunday it may have to carry even more, if Tommy Fleetwood’s home dream, Scottie Scheffler’s title defence and England’s football fortunes all come to a head on the same afternoon.

The pace of the build-up has been relentless: a course that GOLF.com’s reporters call the driest they have seen at an Open in four years; a six-time major winner publicly needling a two-time U.S. Open champion days before he even hits a shot; and a World Cup semi-final kicking off the same night practice rounds wrap up. With Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose all among the home favourites, the question hanging over Birkdale is simple: can Claret Jug glory and World Cup glory really land in England on the same weekend?

How Is Royal Birkdale Playing Ahead Of The 154th Open?

According to GOLF.com, Royal Birkdale has baked out into a brown, rock-hard test, its fairways and greens already stripped of colour by Monday amid a prolonged heatwave. PGA Tour pro Michael Kim summed it up on X: “Guys… it is FIRM out here,” reporting a 4-iron carrying 290 yards downwind on more than one hole, and warning players to “avoid at all cost” Birkdale’s fairway pot bunkers.

What Are Scottie Scheffler And Rory McIlroy Saying About Their Own Legacies?

Per Sky Sports, both McIlroy and Scheffler have dismissed legacy as a motivating factor this week, with McIlroy saying he does not “really care” how he is remembered and Scheffler insisting it has “never really” driven him. Scheffler arrives off the back of a missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open — his first in four years and the end of a 78-event streak of made cuts — which he called “significantly more frustrating” than a runner-up finish.

Why Is Nick Faldo Worried About Bryson DeChambeau?

DeChambeau touches down at Birkdale with three missed cuts from three 2026 majors already behind him. According to Golf.com, Sir Nick Faldo used his Sky Sports Golf podcast to declare DeChambeau has “zero clue of strategy” on links golf, coining the nickname “Rough Slam” for his run of major misses.

Can Tommy Fleetwood Finally End His Major Wait At Home?

Per Sky Sports Golf, Fleetwood called playing in his hometown “an absolute dream,” recalling how he used to sneak onto the Birkdale course as a boy growing up in Southport, where a mural of him now looks out over the local sports club wall.

How Is Scottie Scheffler Preparing To Defend The Claret Jug?

According to The Open, Scheffler officially returned the Claret Jug in a public ceremony on Tuesday before headlining the inaugural Heroes Classic alongside Jordan Spieth, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Fleetwood. Scheffler is bidding to become the first player to defend the title since Harrington in 2008 — also at Birkdale.

Is England’s World Cup Run Distracting The Open Field?

According to Front Office Sports, Justin Rose called the prospect of an England World Cup win landing alongside his own Claret Jug triumph “a lovely double,” while Fitzpatrick admitted to having “20 quid on England to win the World Cup.” R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said organisers will “try and avoid” a Sunday scheduling clash should England reach the final.

By Sunday evening, Royal Birkdale’s fairways, one podcast feud and a football match in New Jersey may all be fighting for the same headline. The message coming out of Southport this week is clear: nobody at the 154th Open is pretending it’s business as usual.
