Rory McIlroy has shifted his attention to a UK links doubleheader after finishing tied 32nd at the U.S. Open, with the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open now next on his competitive schedule.
The Northern Irishman is set to return to home-style conditions after a difficult week at Shinnecock Hills, where Wyndham Clark held off Sam Burns to win a second U.S. Open title. McIlroy’s own challenge faded after a damaging third-round 73, but the calendar now gives him a swift route back into terrain that suits both his eye and his ambitions.
McIlroy is due at The Renaissance Club from July 9-12 for the Genesis Scottish Open before heading to Royal Birkdale for The Open Championship, according to a fresh update from the DP World Tour.
McIlroy’s Links Reset Carries Race To Dubai Weight
The move matters because McIlroy is not simply filling his schedule. The Scottish Open is the DP World Tour’s second Rolex Series event of the season, and The Open offers another major-stage chance after his Shinnecock frustration.
McIlroy said it was his favourite time of year to return home and play links golf, adding that the U.S. Open had not been too dissimilar to an Open Championship once the course firmed up over the weekend.
That makes the next fortnight more than preparation. For McIlroy, it is a chance to turn disappointment into rhythm before Royal Birkdale and keep pressure on the Race to Dubai picture.
