After an incredible 64 consecutive weeks, Dustin Johnson’s reign as golf’s world number 1 is over.
A great performance from Justin Thomas at the Players Championship was enough for the 25-year-old to become the 21st world number one since the Official World Ranking started.
Thomas has deserved it after some brilliant performances in the last couple of seasons on the PGA Tour, collecting the most wins of any player during that period. It is these good performances that lead him to collect last years FedEx Cup and Player of the Year awards.
Talking to the media after his final round at the Players Championship, Thomas said that reaching the top was a goal of his, but he will only feel happy if he manages to remain in the top spot for a long period of time.
It’s important but it’s not something where it’s like I just want to do it once.
I want to do it for a really, really long time because that means I’m playing better than everybody else for an extended period.
It feels deserved for how I’ve played but, at the same time, if I get hot for a year, couple years or two years or something, have it and then fall off the map, that doesn’t really mean a whole lot to me.
I would much rather continue to play well for another eight to ten years, five to ten years and see how long I can have it.
Thomas is eager to continue his good form and is desperate not to be overtaken as the world number one.
